WD40 probably doesn’t contain phosphoric acid. If you still have any doubts, talk to your local museum curator, he will tell you all about the importance of never treating wood or any other organic material with any fluid that isn’t pH neutral. If you need something that cleans like WD40 but without the harmful acid (which doesn’t help with the cleaning of anything other than corroded metal) just mix a little mineral oil with white spirit. Unfortunately WD doesn’t evapourate completely - the solvents evapourate, leaving the small amount of oil and the acid, which crystalizes within the wood and becomes inert, but is re-activated every time it gets wet. So why would you want to put a mixture of phosphoric acid, mineral oil and solvents (WD40) on your fingerboard. Put some on a piece of scrap wood and watch it fizz. If I gave you a bottle of neat phosphoric acid, would you put it on your fingerboard? If you’re not sure, you can buy phosphoric acid from a car accessory shop under the trade name ‘Jenolyte’. Varnish cleaner is a good suggestion, particularly if it is a student fiddle with a painted fingerboard.Īs for WD40.
